Iffat Idrees is a community and nonprofit leader who provided the seed funding to launch the mobility grant program. She remembered the challenges she faced learning to drive — and remembered the freedom she felt once she finally got her driver’s license.
“Once I began driving, there was just no stopping me,” she said.
That was more than 30 years ago. Now, she supports both Team Zubair by raising funds and leads a separate effort to support children orphaned in Syria. She is an inspiration to all who meet her and are touched by her generosity.

How our grant programs put people on the road
Aziza Aliyar is one of several new arrivals who learned to drive or got a car through Team Zubair.
She arrived in the U.S. from Afghanistan, and, as the oldest, is working to help care for her three siblings.
“It’s very hard for me to manage time for work, shopping, going to doctor appointments, etc. by bus. It is harder during winter. So a car will definitely change our lives,” said Aliyar, who received funding to take on-the-road lessons from the nonprofit effort Team Zubair.
Team Zubair is all about empowering and uplifting the individual. Supporting each other toward independence lifts us all.
Our program awards a limited number of grants to qualified individuals of up to $2,000 for a vehicle downpayment, and up to $1,000 for driving lessons.

It’s been a year! After an uncertain journey, the journalist who inspired this effort is now settled comfortably in the U.S., living with his family in western Pennsylvania.
